A lot of people have taken up reading as a recreational activity with the availability of books being on the rise all over the world. The biggest block for writers is reaching their readers with printing and publishing taking up most of their finances. These writers are now resolving to softcover booklet as the hardcover ones are expensive to produce.

While paperback books are covered in soft, easily bent paper, hardcover books are covered with heavy paper covered with a piece of cloth. Printers began using paperbacks in the 19th century, and it was mostly used for reprinting previously printed books. These books would then be sold for a price lower than the original print at a variety of places.

They were produced in numerous copies and were referred to as mass paperback. Copies not sold were stripped of the cover and pulped such that anyone who finds the book without a cover would know that the author received no royalties from it.

In the 1950s, a first original paperback book was printed. Writers began to embrace this practice; especially first timers as it would cost them less. It was considered beneficial as it cost the writer and the reader less, was quicker to produce and the books were readily available to a larger number of people, hence people were able to access the reprints book with ease.

While writing a book to be printed with a paperback, the writer edits the first page and last as the front cover and back cover respectively. The second page and second last pages are the inner sides of the cover for the front and the back respectively. Depending on the writer choice soft covers can be thicker than interior pages or similar to other pages. The thicker pages have extra durability though they are a bit expensive comparatively.

Most printers advocate for fewer copies in hardcover compared to the paperback ones to create a balance for writers. This is because hardcover books bring in more profit. The books can be printed as the mass paperback or trade paperback.

If one wants to print their book with a paperback, they have various binding options. They include saddle stitching, perfect binding and color coil binding with the easiest and most economical being saddle stitching which makes use of a specific stapler to pin pages together after they are appropriately arranged. For perfect binding, the pages are grouped and attached with a heavier cover to each other into the spine. Color coil binding makes use of a spiral coil which is connected to punch holes in arranged paper. The coil forms the spine of the book.

There was once a phase when some publishers criticized paperback books saying their diminished the entire structure of printing. Paperback booklets however despite all these have gained popularity among writers and are now go to for writers without finances who are yet to gain ground. The books have also become loved by many readers.
